The National Assembly Programming Committee convened last Friday and scheduled two hybrid sittings for the lower house on 9 and 16 May 2024.

Officially, this is still a constituency period for the National Assembly, but these sittings have been arranged to finalise urgent legislative business and other outstanding matters.

Thursday’s plenary agenda is lengthy and varied:
-Older Persons Amendment Bill; Housing Consumer Protection Bill; Children’s Amendment Bill and
-Responsible Spending Bill
-Report of PC on Justice and Correctional Services on Recommendation of a person for appointment as Deputy Public Protector
-Report of Joint Committee on Ethics and Members’ Interests on Review of Code of Ethical Conduct and Disclosure of Members’ Interests for Assembly and Permanent Council Members
-Report of PC on Public Enterprises on Alleged protected disclosure made by former Director-General of the Department of Public Enterprises
-Report of Independent Panel established in accordance with Rule 129U to conduct a preliminary enquiry relating to a motion proposing the removal of Mr Mbuyiselo Botha from Office as a commissioner of the Commission for Gender Equality (CGE)

Elsewhere, the upper chamber (NCOP) has also scheduled one plenary sitting on Thursday.

The focus will also be on legislation: the Division of Revenue Bill, Pension Fund Amendment Bill, Gold and Foreign Exchange Amendment Bill, Municipal Demarcation Authority Bill, Statistics Amendment Bill, Preservation of Agricultural Land Bill, and National Nuclear Regulator Amendment Bill. In addition, delegates will deal with motions and assorted reports.

On the sidelines, Parliament is seized with preparations for the conclusion of the sixth Parliament and the establishment of the seventh parliamentary term.
